Television Series Annuals
- Part Two

Artists were rarely, if ever, credited on each and every story in any of the annuals. But certain styles are unmistakeable, while others are less so.

While every attempt has been made to cross check and very the credits listed here, there is always a margin of error and if you disagree or have better information regarding the identity of any of the artists, please contact us at technodelic@blueyonder.co.uk.

(?) indicates conjecture, or unconfirmed.

Notes:
One of the 'purest' of the television related annuals, with stories and features based only on the series itself, and wholly photographic content.
Some early production names appear in the stories, such as Space Tracker Paula Harris (in Satellite Scare) and Peter ('Jon' in one caption) Karlin.
The Snatch has no connection to the UFO strip of the same name from 1971.
The entire annual is viewable online here.

A nice edition packed with photos.
There's also a good smattering of features about Moonbase Alpha and the Eagle transporters.
An interesting series of biography/interviews feature the actors (Martin Landau, Barbara Bain and Barry Morse) meeting their on-screen characters and discussing their lives - certainly a more interesting approach than usual.

A quite stunning annual, worthy of the heyday of Century 21, with a higher page count
Some nice story ideas (Survival - Exodus, Another Chance! and Meeting Point stand out) are marred only by some rather blurry picture reproduction.
The strip Mindprobe would be reworked by writer Angus Allan the following year, into the Space:1999 strip for the ©1977 Look-In annual. The story idea would also resurface in Look-In during 1980 as a Battlestar Galactica strip.
This edition appeared just as the second year of Space:1999 was being aired in the UK.

As with his Look-In strips, Angus Allan believes David Kano to still be a regular in the series at this point.

Notes:
With material reprinted entirely from the 1976 American Charlton comics, little seen in the UK at the time, this would have been interesting addition to any collection.
Even though the comics are now morely widely available through the internet, the colour reproduction and printing is still marked superior to the originals.

Notes:
The first new Anderson based annual in four years, and a slightly larger format than usual.
There's a feel of trying to recapture some of the feel of the TV21 annuals, though as the features add nothing new to the reworked publicity material, it doesn't quite work.
It can be inferred one of the writers is Angus Allan, as Ninestein's Big Drop appears, reworked to a five part story, as the second strip in Look-In.

The full page illustrations for Operation Masterstrike had already been published in the Thunderbirds Poster Book by Hawk Publications in 1992. They were also available as art prints. The one of Thunderbirds 1, 2, 3 and 5 and, Lady Penelope and Parker with FAB 1, were used for the puzzles and features pages.

Notes:
Not a bad annual, with three complete stories reprinted from TV Century 21 that complement the two Boxtree graphic compilations.
The three strips were reprinted in the annual first, delaying their appearance in the Stingray comic.
The supplemental material is reprinted from the Stingray comic.
A production error meant Stingray was omitted from the spine, which only reads 'Annual 1993'.

The Stingray strip is reprinted from The Funday Times supplements.

Strips (Mysteron Targets):

Stories:
We, the Mysterons, Shall Release Two Thousand Criminals.
Notes:
Interestingly, and surprisingly, the strips are reprinted from the 1967 Captain Scarlet annual.
The text story and features also come from the 1967 annual, but are reset with new photos.
The two Captain Scarlet annuals, the second Thunderbirds annual, and Space Precinct, would feature the lowest page count ever - half that of the 1960s annuals!
This edition was reissued in with a softback cover the following year as a Captain Scarlet special.

Notes:
Along with the Space Precinct annual the following year, probably the most disappointing annuals based on a Gerry Anderson series.
While no writer is credited, this edition credits Arkadia for the illustration and design. This company was also responsible for other merchandise at the time, and illustrated the four Captain Scarlet novelisations by Dave Morris.
Unfortunately, the adaptation of 'Treble Cross' must win the award for the worst artwork ever to grace a Captain Scarlet, or Gerry Anderson based, strip.
A quirk of the licensing for the annual seems to dictate the necessity of a TM after every mention of Captain Scarlet.
A number of photographs are printed the wrong way, grainy, or are misplaced - is the photo of Captain Magenta on page 21 really supposed be one of Captain Scarlet?

Notes:
'Official Annual - As Seen On TV' - but this cannot hide the fact this edition, the first based on a new Anderson series since Terrahawks, falls far short of the giddy expectations of the 1960s and 1970s annuals.
In all fairness though, this edition was probably standard fare among other annuals of the time, and the idea of the annual being a training and assessment manual for Demeter City Police Cadets gives the material a nice linking thread.
The photographic content is quite high, though the late withdrawal to use those of Simone Bendix and the cast of the Brogan family leave gaps in the layout of some pages.
As with the first Grandreams Captain Scarlet annual, this was reissued in with a softback cover the following year as a Space Precinct special.

Security Hazard - in six Videprints
Notes:
Another relaunch for the Thunderbirds franchise, this time under Carlton, and the first of the 21st Century!
After all the 1990s annuals and merchandise set Thunderbirds in the 2020s, we now return to the series being set in the 2060s, as per TV Century 21 and the 1960s annuals.
The digital remastering of Thunderbirds for the DVDs makes images direct from the episodes easier, and these form the basis of new photonovel type adaptations.
The episode chosen is 'Security Hazard', and this is a good opening choice as it features all the main Thunderbirds in action.
Interestingly, some of the 'narration captions' for each characters 'report' pay homage the 1960s mini-albums - notably Scott for the 'Trapped In the Sky' segment.
The features are nicely presented, if featuring nothing new, and appear to go back to square one, ignoring the TV21 histories and working almost purely from the series as canon.

Again, one of the 'narration captions' pay homage to a 1960s mini-album - this time, Brains for the 'Desperate Intruder' segment.
While only three episodes are adapted into 'VideFile' reports, elements of other episodes are incorporated into the features.
Nods to TV21 and other Anderson series creep into some of the features and 'challenge' quizzes, with Colonel Tobolsk, Mr Steelman, Skydiver and World Intelligence Network mentioned.

Notes:
So far, the only other annual of the 21st century to feature a series other than Thunderbirds.
After using 'The Mysterons' as an introduction, the 'Lunarville' trilogy gives the adaptations a nice running continuity.
A couple of frames from 'Winged Assassin', where Dr Fawn explains to Captain Scarlet about retrometabolism, are added to the end of 'The Mysterons'.
The features are nicely presented, again working almost purely from the series, but the TV21 histories and biographies are re-used.
